Game Gear Classic but I don't really remember many good games on that system. That's cause there were barely any. The 2 shining force games were decent, but they're also literally Shining Force CD (which was a remake of the 2 with 16 bit graphics) with much worse balancing. Defenders of Oasis is a great little JRPG with an Arabian theme, the first couple Sonics were decent, and the 2 Shinobi games were solid. And that's.. pretty much it. Fun fact, they did do a Game Gear Mini. It was Japan only, came in a couple different colors, each with different games, and TOO damn mini to actually really be able to play. If I had more nostalgia for the machine or I didn't have to pay import markup, I woulda grabbed one for laughs, but for the cost they weren't worth it. A NOMAD one I would.

The few games I did have were pretty decent albeit very short. Off the top of my head, I had the Sonic games, MMPR and MMPR the Movie, Jurassic Park, Lion King, ST: TNG, and G-Loc. Also had a love-hate relationship with the backlight screen. I was happy I didn't need a light like the Game Boy but it sure as shit went through 6 AAA batteries like crazy. Speaking of too damn mini to play, that reminds me of some of those various 3P vintage game systems I saw at Wal-Mart. Some of those, my old ass eyes would need a magnifying glass.

Oh yeah, the port of G-Loc was surprisingly decent. I forgot about that one. But yeah, that screen was.. a thing. Too low resolution to really be beneficial of the full color (and despite the awesome idea of Master System compatibility, half of those games you could barely read the text), and impossible to see in sunlight, and yeah the battery life was *atrocious*. I remember I got mine for Xmas a year we were taking a trip over said vacation, and I had to change batteries twice before we even got on the plane. Those tiny arcade machines? Yeah, neat idea but no way I could enjoy those either.

There are a plethora of modern screen replacements for the Game Gear that make it much more usable. Not only are they more clear, but the LED backlights take waaaaaaaay less power than the god damn fluorescent tube in those things. The other issue though is the Game Gear is plagued by failed electrolytic capacitors, so pretty much 100% of them need a recap, and possible trace repair.

Yeah my original that I still have I checked in with a few years back and it definitely has cap rot. Though the amount of work into replacing them and swapping the screen just... isn't worth it, because the system's library isn't any good anyways and the thing is gigantic. I picked up a clearance DSi a longass time ago and have a SD adapter card with a bunch of NES/SMS/GB(A)/GG games on it and that's been my go-to for 8 bit portable fun for ages. Since it was dirt cheap I just leave it in a backpack when I go places because unlike, say, my phone or Switch I don't really care if it gets more dinged up or lost.

There’s definitely more convenient ways to play these old portable games than futzing with the original hardware. I do like the idea of pimping out the old handhelds though just as a fun electronics project. I want to do a screen mod on at least one of my Game Boys, at some point.
If you (or somebody you know) has a soldering iron, you might want to at least get those old caps off that Game Gear if you ever think you’d want to save it. If they’ve leaked, they’re eating at the board as we speak.

My Game Gear is probably a goner already with those caps. Explains why they video game shop didnt want to touch it when I had to sell a bunch of my video games years ago.

About a week away from release per Amazon. Like my internal debate in the shout about pre-orders, Im questioning if I want to keep the Genesis 2 pre-order. I mean except for the Shinobis and Sonic CD, Im asking myself do I really care enough for the other titles to make this worthwhile for me.

If it wasn't a Genesis I'd probably cancelled it, but my love for classic Sega is still there. Plus, they all but said "if this actually sells well we'll think about a DC or SMS mini" and I VERY much want those to happen.

Plus, they all but said "if this actually sells well we'll think about a DC or SMS mini" and I VERY much want those to happen. If this was a Dreamcast Mini, I would not be questioning on whether to keep it or not. I also do hope that becomes a reality since I never played any DC games but have heard great things. What scares me too about cancelling is the FOMO aspect. Since the reports of how this release is way more limited than the first one, I'd be afraid it would dry up without warning and then I would have to go to eBay if I had a change of heart too late.
