Signed up for CBS All Access this morning so I can check out the first episode of Picard. While I posted a spoiler warning in the title, I will refrain from posting any until more people have seen it. But here are my non-spoiler thoughts:
1. It was awesome to see Patrick Stewart back as Jean Luc Picard. He always has such a great presence on screen but he sounds older and tired in the episode. I know physically he IS older but him sounding older actually works considering the story they have set up for him in the time since Nemesis.
2. The pacing was very slow. I know they have to set up everything but the slow pacing between the action moments I felt hindered things a bit. I'm hoping things pick up a bit in episode 2.
3. They only released one episode today but considering the slow pacing of the first episode, I almost wished they had also released episode 2 for a 2 hour premiere. Might have made for a better introduction.
4. There are nods, easter eggs, and references abound in this episode. But the story they are setting up definitely has potential even though the reason Picard is where he is now sounds a bit cliched. In the end, I'm looking forward to episode 2.

There are reviews that note the first three episodes work better as a single extra long pilot ep, so there's that for pacing.
Overall... maybe I'm just being old and grumpy, but in the end, all I can think of is a line from Insurrection. "Does anyone else remember when we used to be explorers?"
EDIT: That said, Picard was freaking awesome, especially in the interview scene.

Yeah, I ordered the service today for it too. I absolutely loved it. This is what I wanted from Star Wars' Sequel trilogy. The nods and acknowledgements in the series I found amazing. Everything from bringing up Maddox, outright killing that theory that B4 became Data, and even the idea that the Romulans are using Borg tech, which plays right into Star Trek 10's backstory with Nero and the Narada. I'm still reminding of that line Nero said: "I was off-planet, doing my job while your Federation did nothing, and allowed my people to burn while their planet broke in half."
That sounds a lot like what happened here.

Kirsten Beyer is one of the main writers, well known for her work in the post-Nemesis Pocket novels, particularly the Voyager relaunch books. She's well versed in the universe of Trek soft canon, and the Romulans playing with Borg tech is straight from the Countdown comic released before the first JJ Abrams movie. It was their dicking around with dangerous tech which caused the Hobus supernova to explode through subspace, allowing it to destroy multiple star systems including Romulus. I need to pull that comic back out and see what else in it lines up with this show.
Anyway, I love how this show looks like it's going to take on several things fans want to see. The fallout of the Hobus supernova, bringing back Data, maybe some kind of closure with the Borg.

Anyway, I love how this show looks like it's going to take on several things fans want to see. The fallout of the Hobus supernova, bringing back Data, maybe some kind of closure with the Borg. I loved all the Countdown/Star Trek 2009 nods and glad they didn't just retcon all that out of existence. When they were referencing the supernova, a small part of me was actually hoping Spock would get a name drop since I assume he is presumed dead since getting tossed back in time. I would not be opposed to Data coming back somehow in a non-dream capacity but from what I understand in reading interviews with him, Brent Spiner only agreed to return if they did not undo his death in Nemesis. Speaking of Data, friend of mine was losing his mind in the opening segment when they showed the Enterprise-D but then had Data wearing his post Generations grey shoulder uniform in the D's ten-forward. Even though it was a dream, where it's not supposed to make much sense/rhyme/reason, he still complains about it.

I assumed they'd bring back Data if only because they couldn't resist the temptation. If Spiner refused to do that though, then I guess the better way to phrase it is they're bringing closure to that storyline.
They said at the time that Countdown was canon. I don't know how much they're actually holding to that. I'll have to pull that book back out and see how well it lines up. Either way, I already have to hold multiple Trek canons in my head. The main canon timeline, Pocket post-Nemesis books, Star Trek Online, Kelvin timeline. What's one more wrinkle in the timeline.

It seemed to go a lot faster than the first one. I was like "wow, over already?"

Watched the first episode on YouTube. Very well done, thoroughly enjoyed it. Though I can't help but find something trite about killing off Dahj, and then jump focus to her sister. I was actually anticipating a reveal that she somehow survived the explosion, limped away to heal/repair, but it doesn't look like it so far. Maybe later in the season, as a surprise or something. And OF COURSE the Romulan with the British accent is going to turn out to be evil. Didn't need the season preview to tell me that.
I love so much that he named his dog Number One.
Don't exactly have the funds to drop on All Access, so I'll have to find other ways of watching the rest of the series.

It seemed to go a lot faster than the first one. I was like "wow, over already?" I noticed that too. But I admit I was a little lost in the beginning. Trek has been known for techno babel but it was in overdrive for the first 15-20 minutes. But the rest of the episode was decent although it seems like they are trying to cram alot of set up into this episode.
