The first live action Gundam film will be co-produced by Sunrise and Legendary. Legendary's previous productions include Pacific Rim, Godzilla 2014 and the upcoming Godzilla, King of the Monsters and Detective Pikachu. A release date has not yet been set.

I'll say it before Shocky does... There actually was a live action Gundam already made back in 2000. G-Savior.
We...
We don't talk about it.
It's best to ignore it and consider this new Gundam movie the real adaptation.
Though I wonder now? They say it'll be in the Universal Century. So will it be a new story or an adaptation of an existing one? Because I can go without ever seeing a live action Amuro Rey or Banagher Links.

It seriously looks like it was made on a PlayStation 2. More seriously though, yeah, some concern about a live action movie in general given how bad most of the live action anime adaptions have been. Done right, I think it could be cool, but the first Pacific Rim was about as close as I think it's gonna get.

To make things worse? The background sets for G Gundam movie was reused sets from Seaquest DSV. (You can see Darwin's tube in a lot of the background shots.) And the soldiers' uniforms are reused from not just Starship Troopers... But the modified ones from Power Rangers Lost Galaxy. And to add insult to injury, the PS2 game that was release with it, noteworthy for having more Mobile Suits than in the movie, which also moved more fluidly.

There is one reason to watch G-Saviour, and one reason only.
Blu Mankuma is in it.

Oh, is it another Universal Century movie? Yawn. If it was something original, I'd be interested, but they're probably just going to hammer the One Year War in for fanboy cred and ignore the other continuities.

I can see your point... But you know, with Unicorn and Thunderbolt, there's been a bunch of Gundam UC series that stood on it's own pretty well.

Even Unicorn and Thunderbolt, if you don't know at least the basics of what the Federation and Zeon are, and what Newtypes are, and what the fuck a mobile suit is, they don't waste any time explaining it. OM's most likely right, it'll be a One Year War rehash which by necessity has to waste a bunch of time explaining basic backstory that the Japanese audience of the OVAs does not need. I'm pretty sure everybody's grandma in Japan at least knows the basics of what Gundam is, so we've just been glossing over all that.

I have to disagree. My wife, when we started watching Unicorn... That was her first Gundam show. She knew NOTHING going in. But she had no problem figuring out what exactly what was going on. Mobile Suits? She caught on. Giant robot like in Pacific Rim. Newtype? New type of person, from colonizing space. One Year War? A really bad fucking war. Some dude named Char? A Darth Vader like dude that's now dead. The only thing I had to explain to her was the whole Minovsky Particles, because she's a scientist and she loves to hear that shit.
I know it's generally a trend to make fun and say that people be stupid... But as long as you present it properly, people will catch on and figure it out. If that wasn't true, then the Lord of the Rings movies would never have made as much money as they did.

I don't think that it's going to necessarily be hard for audiences to catch on. I'm mostly just burned out on the Universal Century continuity entirely. Like, my jam is SEED (but not Destiny) and 00, with a side of Wing and G. I like the wildly divergent takes each AU brings to the whole. Which is why this is one of those things I'd HOPE is an entirely new continuity, but I'm not getting my hopes up given UC's colossal fan appeal in Japan.
