So I got this guy recently and I've been having a lot of fun with him. So I thought I'd toss up a pictoral review for folks who haven't been able to score him yet, which touches on a few points I've heard brought up for people who just want freaking photos, not a review with your voiceover, dammit. Apologies for the phone-cam quality and enormous images. I can't seem to figure out how to make Google Photos make thumbnails like Picasa did.
First up, vehicle mode!
This is probably the weakest mode, but while some people will be bugged by it, other people (i.e. me) won't be. I can see where there were design compromises made for the rest of the modes, and the arms for Pax just sorta hang out there. But still, I just adore how they used the bottom of Pax's head as the trailer hitch. That's some creative design work.
Next up is Orion Pax
He's not bad, though admittedly some might be put off by the cab stuff on the back. But the front is basically the first ever G1 cartoon Pax ever that looked show accurate. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the design, but he's not a BAD design by any means. I just find the head a bit weird. With Prime's separated rifle, you can have a small gun for a small bot, or him carrying around a semi-automatic grenade launcher thing.
The big guy is a pretty solid G1 Optimus Prime, albeit with some details different due to the trailer making the bulk of his body. The way the arms and legs are attached to a frame that the Pax cube plugs into makes me think of the Aliens power loader which I kinda dig. Also, he's REALLY poseable in the legs and not bad in the arms. Definitely a nice Leader Scale Prime if you want one less Powermaster-y.
That said, let's turn him around so people can see the back.
Pax's legs are a very obvious backpack and his colors don't go all the way around. Does this bug me? Not at all. I kinda like the jetpack thing. But people who dislike hollow plastic, not-entirely continuous color schemes, and the like may be disappointed. Personally, I find Prime really solid, with his only real "failing" being the fact Orion's arms are really obvious in the vehicle's cab mode.
and a half out of 5.
