average rent around me for a decent place is around 1200 a month. more than double what I'm currently paying.
Spent the last week doing discussions with my bank on mortgages and such; tons of fun.
There are some places I could buy within my range but apparently no one wants to sell to me. I found one this week; days before opening & scheduled a viewing early morning on the first day. made what I thought was a good offer. still turned me down.
not sure why I even bother to try.

Rent is fucked. My mortgage for my entire townhouse is about what I was paying for my 1 bedroom apartment right down the road. I had to do some financial kung fu to get a mortgage with no down payment and come up with closing costs, but it was worth it.
If you don't have down payment money, look at joining a credit union which offers 100% financing mortgages. If you're willing to look a bit more rural, you can also get full financing through the USDA (which is what my sister did, and don't worry she' not a farmer or anything).
