Okay, my thoughts on this. And for the record I LOVED King of the Monsters.
I liked it a lot. A LOT.
This wasn't so much a follow up to KotM, as it was a follow up to Kong: Skull Island. And that's not a bad thing! I liked K:SI too, but this was a Kong movie with Godzilla as the antagonist. (Kinda.) I was kinda bored with the Godzilla supporting cast side of things. The deaf kid was actually important to Kong. But Eleven and Firefist just seemed like padding. I won't lie, when they were on the screen, I sorta checked out.
The Kong vs. Godzilla stuff? Man, that was some badassery going on right there, and I wish I could have seen this on Imax. It did seem like Godzilla had the upper hand in each of the fights, until the final fight with the special guest villain. (And yeah, I know he was spoiled by the toys, but I managed to avoid that. I was legit thrilled to see it!)
I can see why they're bringing Kong to the forefront here again. Toho is about to yank Godzilla back to focus on another Shin Godzilla movie or something and Warner Bros. probably wants their own monster to focus on. (By the way, I did appreciate the insertion of footage from the 1933 movie in the opening montage.) Though I thought it would have been great to have a Doctor Gottlieb show up in the aftermath saying there might be something to the MechaGodzilla idea. (Seriously though, you need TWO people to pilot the giant robot!)
Yeah, I loved it. It's not high art, but it's worth it for me.
(If Warner's wants a popular giant monster to focus on, I have a possible suggestion that comes in the form of giant turtle.)
