So the fifth CW Superhero series has started, and I did like the first episode- even if it was a bit formulaic.
Anyone else check out the show?

I liked it quite a bit. I know next to nothing about Black Lightning outside of his handful of appearances in DC animated shows and various big event comics where he's not much more than a cameo, so I was able to go into it with no preconceived notions. I'm actually more familiar with Tobias Whale thanks to Batman stuff. The one thing I really like is that he's an older, more seasoned superhero which gives the whole thing a vibe that's quite different than the usual "young hero trying to find his way" narrative, plus it breaks out of the initial origin plot in the first couple episodes. I'm also glad that James Remar is in this. He's not on TV enough. If nothing else, this show did finally prompt me to do a little background digging to determine exactly why Black Lightning, Black Vulcan, and Static all exist within the same universe simultaneously.

I liked it for the most part. I still think it's odd that he used a goon as a human shield. Not just because his suit is apparently bulletproof, but due to how he was previously so determined to help people rise from their circumstances. But I suppose his daughters being in danger change that?
I'm iffy on his costume. The lightning design seems like a neon sign, but it at least seems to have an in-universe function.

I liked the grittier feel, the fully formed hero and the family aspect. The costume is growing on me. I also appreciate whenever any of these shows introduce classic supporting characters like Inspector Henderson. Kinda surprised they're going to Thunder (and presumably Lightning, eventually) this early in the series. I knew they'd move Black Lightning out of Metropolis, but the name of the city they made up for him, Freedland, is a bit too on the nose considering the topics they're trying to tackle. I'm intrigued by the mention of superheroes in other cities. Although not set in the Arrowverse (yet), I'm interested to see what other characters they bring in. With Grace Choi already cast I'm guessing there will be some version of the Outsiders eventually.
