Saw it tonight & it was great. But before I do up a big review- something I noticed.
Memo is seen reading a GoBots magazine early in the movie.
Shatter & Dropkick... It’s Crasher & Copter.
Her voice made me think of Crasher a couple times, which I thought was cute. But then I noticed: She’s also a black and red car like Crasher. She outranks Dropkick like Crasher outranks Copter. He turns into a blue helicopter- just like Copter.
Could it be a secret legit tribute?!

So, the Bumblebee movie has beaten Aquaman over in China, bringing it's total, along with the domestic count to $289M on a $135M budget, making it officially past the breaking even point.
For a good comparison? X-Men: First Class had a similar budget to Bumblebee and it brought in a final cume of $354M. And Bumblebee is looking likely to achieve that goal too. Also, the producers didn't call First Class a reboot either. They STILL don't. Even though it totally was.

Finally saw it, and was thoroughly entertained. It had some of the same "shenanigans" from the first movie, but this made a lot more sense given 'Bee's damage.
So, if the Decepticons basically invented the internet...well, maybe we should keep an extra eye on Al Gore, is what I'm saying.

Maybe I'm just speaking for myself here, but honestly...does anyone *actually* care if this connects to the other movies? Or even the first one? This isn't like wondering how Peter Parker's life is supposed to be exactly the same after making a pact with the Devil, or which origin for Hawkman is being referenced, or the pre-2009 Star Trek universe. There wasn't a whole lot to get invested in, because these movies were quite proudly dumb popcorn movies and kept getting dumber. Sure I saw the Section 7 van and 'Bee did change into a Camero eventually, but this isn't a case where I'm overly concerned about continuity.
If Bumblebee is the beginning of a completely new, separate universe of alien robots punching each other, and they never reference Agent Simmons, Sam Witwicky, Megan Fox' hotpants or Sam's Mom ever again...so what?

Don't get me wrong, I really want BB to be a reboot vs. a prequel. To be honest, if we never hear from the references you mention, I would not have any problem with it. The biggest reason I care, is the last couple of movies have been such a cluster story, clarity, and continuity wise, I just wan't them to start over so if we do end up getting a BB 2 or a BB spinoff or something, they can go a fresh route instead of trying to do the prequel route and having to be careful with what they can or can't do with certain characters. For example, I heard Megatron was supposed to have a cool scene in BB but they had to write it off because of the 2007 movie.

As I mentioned to someone else who was ranting angrily about it being a prequel and not a reboot... We need to remember that even now, the producers don't consider X-Men First Class a reboot, as much as they consider it an alternate timeline. And Bumblebee was funded not by Di Bonaventura Pictures like movies 1-5, but by Allspark Pictures (Hasbro) and Tencent Pictures (China) and what they say... Goes. THEY'RE calling it a new direction and new timeline. And that's that.
And really? Okay, let's look at the concept of Movie '07 for a second. It's not a bad set up. It's actually kinda ideal. Megatron's unconscious here. The Cybertronian MacGuffin's stuck on Earth somewhere. There's a singular organization hiding the TFs from society. That's a decent set up. It worked for TF Animated, it worked for TF Prime and I think it's what Cyberverse is doing too. If Bumblebee wants to build off the concepts from the original, and then go in it's own direction? I can't see that as a bad thing at all.
I'm saying I'm certain that this Bumblebee will not lubricate on John Tuturro.

Seems like there are significant rumors Paramount's looking at a sequel given the success of this one. Good news, hopefully, for more non-Bay stuff.

Bumblebee is an incredibly "leggy" movie, by far the best in the franchise, hanging on to making more than 420 mil and being successfully confirmed as profitable (and it apparently doesn't open in Japan until March for.. some reason?), so I think there's a real good chance we'll see more of this reboot. I'm pleased.

So, got to see this finally, and it was amazing as others have said.
Interesting bit for me, though, is something I noticed watching clips online (presumably from Chinese theater leaks).
Shatter and Dropkick had three separate robot modes designed. They have Cybertronian forms near Saturn with Cliffjumper. After arriving at Earth, they have robot forms with muscle car kibble. When they scan the chopper and Harrier jet, they get NEW robot modes that add in jet and helicopter kibble on top of their existing car kibble.
It's the LITTLE details that make this so good sometimes.
