Like the title says...
I think the best TF I bought in 2017 has to be MP Megatron 2.0. I do think the idea of Megatron turning into a gun is silly, but that being said I still wanted a better G1 representation for my MP shelf (which was very much lacking in the Con leadership department). He does have a few QC paint issues (that seemed to stem from an extra untranslated step in the booklet) and is a pain to transform but robot mode really shines and looks much better than the oddly thin proportions of 1.0. If I had to stop collecting MPs, I would be satisfied capping it off with Megs 2.0.
Maybe not quite "the worst" but most disappointing for me was TR Trypticon. I dont really want to call him the worst because he did have some good marks. The dino, base, and ship mode all look pretty damn good and Full Tilt as a stand alone figure rivals some of the cheaper sold seperately deluxes in terms of fun factor and articulation. The main point that kills Trypticon from being a best of 2017 toy: quality control stemming from the hip joints and some issues with the tail joint. I understand Hasbro is not perfect and there will be a few QC issues that will crop up but for a figure so heavily hyped and with a $150 price tag, I expected a bit more in ensuring all flaws might have been ironed out. Thankfully the hips on mine are ok after doing some of the modifications online. Apparently some future batches were supposedly corrected and the hips better but I cannot confirm.

On my end, the best I got from 2017 was probably (ironically) Trypticon. His being the first Titan-class I got that I thought genuinely deserved the hype was a stand out thing. Mine was admittedly from a later run so it didn't have the leg issues others did, and as a result, he's just awesome across the board. Runner up would be TLK Voyager Optimus Prime, which did an amazing job of getting both truck and robot modes to look screen accurate with a minimum of kibble.
Most disappointing was probably The Last Knight Voyager Grimlock. Even on sale, I barely messed around with him once I got him since his dinosaur mode is just awkward in a few places and his robot mode's articulation is pretty severely hampered.

Best for me: Easily Powermaster Optimus Prime. Even though he came out in late '16, I got him this year and I've been slowly modifying him over the year. Nothing huge, just a paint app here and there, and a Shapeways addition to the arms. At this point in time, I say he's better than the Ginrai toy. But I am biased and I will openly admit that.
Worst for me: Liokaiser. Combined, he looks amazing. Separated... I'm sorry, they could have tried better. Especially for $90.

I agree he looks awesome combined but not a big fan of the Brawl or Sky Lynx molds at all. EE currently has him clearanced at $65 but still can't do it. Now if he had shown up at Ross or TJ Maxx this past holiday season for $30 to 40 or so, then I'd have gotten him. Don't know if it would happen now that Takara and Hasbro are "unifying the line" but I might have considered a Unite Warriors Liokaiser especially if they used the CW Rook remold into Nosecone and POTP Starscream as the torso.

I can't recommend it even at $65. $40? Yeah, sure. The other guys are worth it for that alone. But $65? Fuck no.

2017 was a banner year for me in that I bought a whopping 11 Transformers...which is the most I've bought in a single year in over a decade. The best had to be Slash. She's a fun little toy, has that classic Dinobot styling while being an entirely new character, and she's a Raptor. Granted, this may seem like an easy choice for me, but it was difficult to choose between her and Topspin. Worst would be Infernocus. Every Toys R Us I go into has 73 of those clogging the shelf and just a smattering of other Cybertronians. Way to go all-in on an overpriced exclusive repaint for a movie series nobody really likes. Most disappointing is definitely Magnus Prime. I missed out on Powermaster Prime but felt okay about it when I saw the first images of Magnus Prime who appeared to be an even better version of the character. THEN he's released in an expensive boxed set with other toys I have no interest in. That was a real let down and reminded me of on of the reasons why I stopped collecting these things as a completest. Moving forward, 2018 will be even bigger for me with the upcoming Prime Masters, remaining Dinobots, and Terrorcons already committing me to more 'Bots and 'Cons than last year.

Interestingly enough, I actually WANTED the other guys in that set, but didn't care about Ginrai/Magnus Prime. (I have my Powermaster Prime.) But frustratingly enough, the OTHER set, with Nautica and Quickswitch... I REALLY wanted that one... And my TRU just sucked balls. I went up there to order it, they had 9 in the distribution center... But couldn't order me one, after literally making me wait almost an hour to be told no.

That was a real let down and reminded me of on of the reasons why I stopped collecting these things as a completest. While not as big as Trypticon, Magnus Prime was another letdown because of Hasbro's QC again. Some Magnus Primes were reported missing the clips on the bottom of his feet that would be used to attach Godbomber and mine is among them. Thankfully I have no plans to get Godbomber so it's not a complete dealbreaker, just kinda sucks it happened though. Wonder whatever happened to Hasbro saying they were going to make second runs of the box sets. I know it can't be for the supposed "lack of interest so we cancelled those plans" reason.

Way to go all-in on an overpriced exclusive repaint for a movie series nobody really likes. Okay, yeah, this guy takes the Worst title on mine too. I bought one because I'd liked the original combiner, and while he has his benefits, a few pieces stick together TOO tightly, and his limbs are prone to splitting moreson than the original mold. Could've been decent, but ended up disappointing.

Best for me was Unite Warriors Baldigus, an absolutely gorgeous set and a nice homage to a TF series that doesn't get enough love.
Most disappointing was Broadside. The designers should have gone with a smaller, more believable watercraft and done a better job on the jet mode. As it stands the tiny aircraft carrier still looks ridiculous, the "jet" is one of the least aerodynamic looking things put to plastic, and his robot mode looks undersized next to the superior Springer and Sandstorm.
