This discussion has been making the rounds online and thought it made an interesting discussion. Seems like Playstation's license for Discovery content is ending and it's removing access to that content in users' video libraries. The debate online is that users have "purchased" this content and Playstation removing access is almost akin to theft. I had always wondered what would happen in a situation like this. And now that we have a precedent, I think it should be a good point why still having physical media is a good thing. Can't take access to physical media away just because of licensing issues. This has popped up before. I remember Amazon briefly losing the rights to share a book on kindle, I think it was 1984 of all things, and of course there are various services that have gone under. In many ways, you're paying a rental fee, and it's bullshit.

This is why when it comes to games and movies I've stuck to physical media outside of dirt cheap sales as much as I possibly can.

I fundamentally resent the notion of "purchasing" streaming content. Like MD said, that's a rental at best. Unless I download the content and it sits on my device irrevocably, that is not a purchase.
With games, I fully expect people to figure out a way to crack them and allow the games to be distributed online, though it may take a while after the console becomes unsupported for that to happen. With PC games, physical media is basically dead right? I can't think of when I last saw a physical PC game sitting on a shelf.

Welp, as someone else said...
If buying isn't owning, then piracy isn't stealing.

I still see shovelware on disk at places like Walmart - poker, hidden item, mystery games, stuff like that, but the last major release PC game I remember buying on disk was Diablo III and that came out 11 years ago, and even then I was already digital for a lot of PC games. Ironically that's the one platform I mostly feel okay with it just due to how PC is, though I have still lost a few from the early digital era.
