So WB is the first studio to say "fuck it". Every 2021 film will release simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max for a 30 day window at no additional cost. So far this is US only. This includes Dune, Matrix 4, Space Jam 2, James Gunn's The Suicide Squad and...what was the other one?....oh, yeah....
GODZILLA VS KONG!!!!
Of course this starts with WW84 on Christmas day.
Your move, Mouse.

WB just fired a shot across the Mouse's ears and theaters in general. Screw that extra $30 Disney+ fee. I know it's not going to help theaters next year but to be honest I'm personally glad WB is going to do this because until the world gets Covid under control, I am scared to death to go into a movie theater and my dad is too since his health issues make him high risk for Covid complications. I have a computer ready to plug into our non-Smart HDTV so we can watch WW84 on Christmas evening and I'll do the same for Godzilla vs. King.

Time Warner's parent company (AT&T) has lost a shitton of money due to a combined factor of bad business decisions (their like 9 different TV service offerings prior to HBO Max), a rapidly changing market (Satellite TV died WAY faster than expected and DirecTV is basically valueless, they're trying to sell it off for pennies on the dollar), and Covid hit the telecom/cell phone industry HARD. They really are putting a big push behind HBO Max and with this incredibly brazen move they've suddenly made it look really interesting. If anyone actually cared about Game of Thrones anymore, I'd put money on the prequel series being shipped off to HBO Max exclusivity too, but that pooch is screwed. That said, I'm super excited to be able see Dune! And WW84 looks to be good too, and hopefully Godzilla V Kong is as well.

You know, it's entirely possible that they were already planning something like this and HBO just beat them to it. Either way, it'll serve the Mousehouse right. Don't fuck with your paid clients like that Mulan crap was.
But I'm not going to lie, if they can't get that Roku thing solved, we'll just buy a Fire Stick or something. At this point, this is too huge of a deal to ignore. A lot of those movies I might not even have bothered to pay and see... But now? Oh yeah.
That's not even count any stuff they HAVEN'T announced yet. (Like if this is gonna carry over to 2022, does that mean we get the Batman here as well?)
As for Disney?

I also have Roku on two TV's, so I just picked up a Fire Stick for $18. I haven't subscribed yet but they're offering 20% off if you sign up for 6 months. Considering that all the DC Universe shows are now going there for new seasons, they would have gotten me eventually.

What is the going rate on HBO Max in this case? I wasn't really considering it, because the main thing they had I was concerned about was Gen:LOCK season 2. But with this....<gestures> I could be convinced.

I believe it's currently the most expensive streaming service. $14.99 a month or $69.99 for 6 months.

But with this....<gestures> I could be convinced. there's a lot of ways to get it free - I got it thru my cable/internet bundle -- basically if you have HBO as a channel you probably get Max (though in Comcast's ineptitude, there's no actual app for it so I have to run it thru my Xbox or PS4 or PC or something ), and it's bundled into the higher tiers of both AT&T cell phone and internet plans, so depending on who your providers are you might already have it and just need to set it up.

I also get my HBO Max through mine and my dad's cable service since we have the HBO package. There are a few decent movies on there but nothing that I would pay $14.99 a month for if I didn't already have it through said cable co. But with the movie deal with WB, it would definitely make the $14.99 price a hell of alot more reasonable, especially since on average, it costs about $30+ for two people to go the theater here (pre-Covid). We also have ATT but we must not have the good higher end package because they never offered it outside a "free trail" using a provided code. However, speaking of the free trail, I read the other day that HBO Max is dumping the whole free trail offer. Disney + and Hulu also ended their free trails earlier as well. It doesn't surprise me HBO Max doing this ahead of WW84 but I do kind of hate this because I would like a small look at the services before I start to pay. It seems like they could easily reduce the preview to maybe a shorter 7 day window instead of 30 days and I know they could easily block WW84 and future WB early release movies to only paid subscribers. variety.com/2020/digital/news/hbo-max-ends-free-trial-wonder-woman-1984-1234845579/

Yeah, agreed, I wouldn't be paying 14.99 a month stand alone either. There's a lot of good older content on there (the WB back catalog, lots of classic action movies, old Kurosawa stuff, a huge chunk of old Godzilla stuff, etc), but nothing that's been must have. This movie thing is a bold push and I could see myself keeping it depending on what's coming out or not. I know the newer AT&T plans let you do the whole "choose your level" thing Verizon's done for a couple years, so the cheapest way to get it would probably to just put one line on that top service level and adjust the rest to need, but like all carriers, how much that's gonna soak you for depends on how many people you have on your plan -- us single folks get screwed.
