For the first time in the West, Criterion is releasing the entire Showa Era on one Blu-ray set. 8 discs, 15 films in an illustrated book format with new pop art style illustrations. SRP is $225, but sites like Deep Discount have the pre-order price as low as $160. There's even some new material in the bonus features. Releasing in October. www.criterion.com/boxsets/2648-godzilla-the-showa-era-films-1954-1975

That's not as expensive as I thought it would be given Criterion. I think my Criterion copy of Seven Samurai was like $80 for one (really long) movie.
Any idea if they'd go forward and do Heisei and Millennium sets?

Not just Toho, but literally everything? That would be a licensing nightmare. I wonder if it's even known where the rights to some of that stuff reside now.

No, no, I'm just talking about Toho...Varan, Mothra, Rodan, Atragon, Frankenstein, Gargantuas, Yog, Dogora, Mysterians, King Kong Escapes...probably throw Gorath and Matango in there also. Most of those are impossible to get these days on disc. All the Gamera films are fairly easy to find, there's already a Blu-ray set with both the Showa and Heisei series.

So... this thing is a lot bigger than I thought. I expected a normal Blu Ray size package, but this is more akin to the oversize story/picture books you might've had as a kid. It's definitely a cool presentation... I just have no fucking idea what to do with it. It's not going to fit on my shelves. I may have to pick up empty Blu Ray cases, stick the discs in there, then put the actual package away. Which is s shame because it is so nice.

Yikes! And I thought that the big James Bond set from a few years back was awkward.

It kind of reminds me of that "Matrix of Leadership" box set Shout Factory did some years back for G1. But at least with that, the discs were in normal sized cases you could just take out and throw on the shelf. Same with the oversized LaserDisc style packaging Bandai did for Gundam: The Origin, there was a normal Blu Ray case in there. This though... this is form over function. I got some 4-disc Blu Ray cases, I'll just need to fashion some kind of simple spine label. Ugly, but at least it'll go on the shelf.

That looks like a great set, just a little too high for me at the moment. But when you're talking about Godzilla, you need a Kaiju sized book shelf for him.
I'm hoping they might do some more for the more modern Godzilla series. Especially from "Raids Again" (or whatever they called 1985) to "vs. Destoryah". I'm just not familiar with what the different eras are called.

Heisei era. Yeah, those are the ones I prefer. They have that same 80's/90's tokusatsu feel that you see in the Sentai and Kamen Rider stuff from back then. Hopefully Criterion does a set of those as well.
I got a pair of 4-disc Blu Ray cases and moved the discs into there. Stuck P-Touch labels on the spines. The actual package, since it's mostly a book, I think is going to be kept with my other oversized art books.
