Krypton finished airing its initial 10 episode season a couple of weeks ago. The promised story of the adventures of Superman's grandfather, Seg-El, some 200 years ago was quickly revealed as a sort of "Game of Thrones lite" with the houses of El, Vex and Zod all trying to out-maneuver each other. It was quite dull for long stretches but picked up a bit toward the season finale. Quick thoughts with spoilers....
Seg-El, played by Cameron Cuffe, annoyed me at first as the hot-headed young rebel trope, but he grew on me as the season progressed.
This version of Brainiac I thought was really well done. Although his skull ship seemed more organic than techno, but the way he took control of the Voice of Rao reminded me of those great JLU episodes where he was merged with Luthor.
We're told that Brainiac ripping away Kandor is what leads to the planet's destabilization and eventual destruction. Has that ever appeared in the comics before? It's a good scenario to drive he dramatic narrative, but it doesn't make much sense. If aliens took New York or Paris would the Earth explode? I don't think so.
I thought it was an interesting choice to bring diversity to the show by making the Zod's black. I haven't read any online opinions of this show so I don't know if anyone lost their minds over it (if I had to guess I'd say probably). I do like Colin Salmon as General Zod, I've missed him since he left Arrow.
Speaking of Zod, we get the "shocking reveal" that Seg-El was father to both Jor-El and Zod. I hate when writers try to retcon some big, dark secret into the characters' pasts.
I'm sorry, Doomsday sucks in all his forms. SO happy we'll be getting much more next season!
I also hope next season fulfills the promise of Thanagarians, Lanterns and New Gods.
It is so painfully, painfully obvious that "Adam Strange" was meant to be Booster Gold. I don't know what happened in the production process, but it's the height of lazy writing to simply change the character's name and nothing else. I mean, it's not like Adam is a top tier character but he deserved better than to be portrayed as a time-traveling screw-up. Those 5 or 6 Adam Strange fans must be pissed.
Anyway, season finale cliffhanger...the timeline is completely fubared! Have we learned nothing from the Flash?
Anyone else partake in Krypton? Remember, I watch all this shit so you don't have to!
