This whole thing started ten years ago when a handful of Chinese manufactures added various chemicals to their baby formula to increase the protein level. This resulted in six deaths and thousands of other children being hospitalised. Since then, Chinese parents have become too frightened to buy formula that's made in their own country. It was melamine they were adding and they didn't do it with just baby formula, pretty much anyone that bought rice or rice protein from China was at risk. Melamine (yes as in the melamine that those plastic plates are made of) creates a false positive on the protein tests that most industries use. I worked as the admin assistant / project manager for a dog food manufacturing plant and they got caught up in all of that. Evidently one of the clients that they manufactured for (blue buffalo) demanded that they use a particular source of rice protein to keep costs down. In the whole scandal there's an element of no one doing their due diligence, despite the fact that this isn't the first problem with Chinese products/materials, because who the hell puts plastic in food ingredients? So the melamine recall happens and lots of companies get affected by it. its one of the reasons that I don't have a lot of patience for people here in the US who whine about FSMA (food safety modernization act) being over regulation. Yes eventually the market will figure itself out, but there's a lot of inertia to change so market correction can be slow as fuck. And in the mean time how many people and animals does it get to kill or injure in that process?
