As the story goes, pick one up, get stung, you're dead before the shell hits the sand. Because Mother Nature believes there is no kill like overkill.

So obviously my first thought is that if they are so highly venomous then they must be protecting some tasty, tasty flesh.

What, like pufferfish? The meat from each cone shell would be next to nothing... no, it's just the oceanlife evolving in terrifying ways. Still not as bad as my most recent discovery on such things. You know those anglerfish, the ones with the light on a stem to lure in prey? I always thought they were at least small. Nope. There are specimens found over five feet long.

There's very little of the fugu that you can actually eat. That, and the special licensing required to serve it is why it's so crazy expensive. Kind of like how here in Maryland, we'll sit all afternoon picking tiny bits of meat out of crabs, and pay out our ass for the privilege of doing so.

That's why you look around or wait for all-you-can-eat crab legs. But even then. Crab legs are the one food where I'll stop eating it just because I get tired of all the work you have to put into them just to eat them.

Ive tried (not Mako ) crab legs one time. I got frustrated as hell trying to crack the shell just to get the meat. Laugh at me all you want, but by the time I worked through one leg, everyone else was halfway done eating. Can't eat crawfish either. My sister in law showed me how to eat them but I dont know if it was where we ate, but I didnt like them. Id rather have boiled peel and eat shrimp.

Crawfish are pretty good, but that whole sucking the contents out of the head thing is super-overrated.

If it comes out of the water there's a very good chance I will happily stick it in my facehole. Seafood is delicious. I'd totally eat a cone snail if I knew it wouldn't kill me just to test Deino's theory

Good to know for future planning.
