Happy New Year and welcome to the something-teenth Den Movie Preview for 2018! Here you'll find all the sequels, reboots and comic adaptations that you'll be dying to see this year. Descriptions are from the IMDB pages of the respective films followed by my own comments.
Black Panther–2/16
T'Challa, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king.
The trailers look great and the cast is incredible. As the final Marvel film before the war starts, this should do quite well, and maybe we'll find out where that last pesky Infinity Stone is.
A Wrinkle in Time – 3/9
After the disappearance of her scientist father, three peculiar beings send Meg, her brother, and her friend to space in order to find him.
High concept fantasy films haven't really done well in recent years, but maybe the presence of the almighty "O" can create some buzz for this one.
Tomb Raider – 3/16
Lara Croft, the fiercely independent daughter of a missing adventurer, must push herself beyond her limits when she finds herself on the island where her father disappeared.
The trailers haven't created any sort of buzz for this that I can see.
Pacific Rim Uprising – 3/23
Jake Pentecost, son of Stacker Pentecost, reunites with Mako Mori to lead a new generation of Jaeger pilots, including rival Lambert and 15-year-old hacker Amara, against a new Kaiju threat.
No Elba or del Toro, but more jaegers and kaiju. Cautiously optimistic.
Rampage – 4/20
Based on the classic 1980s video game featuring apes and monsters destroying cities.
Another big, loud, dumb movie with the Rock. Looking forward to it!
Avengers Infinity War – 5/4
The Avengers and their allies must be willing to sacrifice all in an attempt to defeat the powerful Thanos before his blitz of devastation and ruin puts an end to the universe.
I have nothing to add.
New Mutants – 5/13
Five young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves.
Fox has had great success taking chances with the X-franchise, from First Class to Legion and The Gifted to Deadpool, so I'm interested in how they do with an X-Men/horror film mash-up.
Solo: A Star Wars Story – 5/25
Han Solo and Chewbacca's adventures before joining the Rebellion, including their early encounters with Lando Calrissian.
After the divisive fan reaction the The Last Jedi, there's blood in the water regarding the Disney Star Wars films. The troubled production on this one leaves it wide open for criticism.
Deadpool 2 – 6/1
After surviving a near fatal knee boarding accident , a disfigured guidance counselor (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Poughkeepsie's most celebrated French Bulldog breeder while also learning to cope with an open relationship. Searching to regain his passion for life, as well as a new stuffed unicorn, Wade must battle ninjas, tight assed metal men, and babysit a group stereotypical side characters as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and creative outlets for his very open-minded sex life. He manages to find a new lust for being a do-gooder, a sparkly Hello Kitty backpack, all while earning the coveted coffee mug title of World's Best 4th Wall Breaking Superhero.
After the first film's success, D2 gets a sweet summer release date. I'm wondering if the recent allegations against TJ Miller will result in last minute cuts and reshoots.
Incredibles 2 – 6/15
Bob Parr (Mr. Incredible) is left to care for Jack-Jack while Helen (Elastigirl) is out saving the world.
'BOUT #$%&ING TIME!!!
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom – 6/22
When the island's dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen and Claire mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event.
I feel like both this reborn franchise and Chris Pratt's man-boy persona have a really short shelf life. At least Malcolm's back to tell us how screwed we all are....again.
Ant-Man and the Wasp – 7/6
As Scott Lang balances being both a Super Hero and a father, Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym present an urgent new mission that finds the Ant-Man fighting alongside The Wasp to uncover secrets from their past.
This will be a nice pallette cleanser after Thanos comes down and wrecks the joint.
Alita: Battle Angel – 7/20
An action-packed story of one young woman's journey to discover the truth of who she is and her fight to change the world.
After the overwhelming success of, and positive reaction to, every other American adaptation of a popular manga/anime, I'm sure this will do gangbusters! Sarcasm implied!
Teen Titans Go! To the Movies – 7/27
It's time to get started but first Beast boy needs to get movie tickets. While the crew are under attack Beast boy loses the tickets and then meanwhile the crew comes back ready to go see a movie of all time.
Marvel characters are present 8 times on this list. DC is represented twice, and this in one of them. Dafuq are you doing, Warner Bros???
The Predator – 8/3
A re-make of the 1987 sci-fi film "Predator".
Today's word is "ambivalent".
Venom – 10/5
This plot is unknown.
I have ZERO confidence that Sony can make a decent Marvel film without Marvel's involvement. That's not a pic of this movie's Venom, by the way, just a random pic. Nothing has been revealed past Tom Hardy's casting.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix – 11/2
Jean Grey begins to develop incredible powers that corrupt and turn her into a Dark Phoenix. Now the X-Men will have to decide if the life of a team member is worth more than all the people living in the world.
So......Apocalypse kinda sucked, huh? This could be the last actual "X-Men" film from Fox, hope they make it count.
The Grinch – 11/9
A grumpy Grinch plots to ruin Christmas for the village of Whoville.
Apparently they're exploring the Grinch's childhood in this one. Can't be any worse than the Jim Carrey version, right?
Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-it-Ralph 2 – 11/21
6 years after the events of "Wreck-It Ralph", Ralph and Vanellope, now friends, discover a wi-fi router in their arcade, leading them into a new adventure.
I didn't think the first one was anything great, but I was never a gamer.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse – 12/14
Plot kept under wraps.
I'm not a fan of how Marvel has watered down the Spidey mythos in the comics over the past 20 years or so, so this sn't one I'm particularly looking forward to. Might read a lot of reviews before I spend money to see it in the theatre.
Aquaman – 12/21
Arthur Curry learns that he is the heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, and must step forward to lead his people and to be a hero to the world.
Bumblebee – 11/21
On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie, on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken.
Capping the year we have the next film in a franchise that everyone mostly hates opening against the next film in a franchise that most everyone has gotten sick of. Both of these hold interest, though. An Aquaman film that could be as good as Wonder Woman is what Warners desperately needs, and the first Bay-less TF film could reinvigorate the franchise.
So, did I miss any? What's on everybody's "must see" list?
