Most of what I heard suggested it's kind of a fanfic-y playing with a section of the lore that's mostly a blank slate to try to cash in. It could've been its own fantasy series, but that doesn't draw Game of Thrones numbers like sticking Lord of the Rings on it.
As such, I never really got into it because there wasn't much about the premise that's a draw for the same reason I'm baffled anyone would get into House of the Dragon. It's a prequel that's set in a time period where we know how this ends and more importantly, most of the beats of the important people involved. There's just not much of a draw.

That's pretty much how I feel in a nutshell, though at least the payoff in LotR is actually worthwhile. No, I'm not still salty. Not at all.

I'm oddly enjoying it because of the fan fic nature of it, it feels more fantasy than GoT ever did and has some likeable characters. i.e. everyone that isn't an elf. Okay, in fairness, Warrior Queen Galadiral and Eldron are okay, but the rest of the elves are typical fantasy snooty assholes. I doubt it will get many seasons, unless Amazon is really wanting to foot the bill for the whole War of the Ring. My only big complaint is they seem to be playing fast and loose with the time line, the rings have yet to be made.... but we have an Iseldur running around and he shouldn't be there for another 500 odd years

I was wondering if Isildur is supposed to be that Isildur, as in "Isildur's Bane" or not. They seem to be saying that the men of Numenor in this time don't live an especially long time like Aragorn, but the show's creators seem to be saying it is the same guy, and his father is the Elendil whose broken sword is used to cut off Sauron's finger. But if they are those people, they should have some elven blood, and thus a longer life... I don't fuckin know.
My understanding is that for some reason the Tokien estate wouldn't let them adapt the Silmarillion, but did give their blessing to play around in this sort of gap in the story. We do know how it'll end up, but like a Greek tragedy, the way they get there is what's interesting. It does still remove some peril when you know certain people can't die. Like obviously Galadriel isn't gonna get ate by a giant sea worm.
I've read the LotR trilogy, but I'm not super deep on Tolkien lore, so I can kind of just roll with whatever. I did take some umbrage to the fact that Durin's wife doesn't have a beard though.
