Figured this would have some cross-hobby interest for you guys.
Recently ran across a preview image for a brick-built Kiryu from one of those third-party LEGO clone companies that operates out of China and sells a lot of stuff on AliExpress. I’ve seen other offerings from them before and just hadn’t pulled the trigger on any since my backlog of unbuilt sets is already disgusting. They have great looking models of Bumblebee, Prime, and Soundwave based on their Bumblebee Movie designs as well as an EVA unit and some Gundam stuff. I’ll probably get Prime and Soundwave eventually, but when I found Kiryu actually for sale a couple days later, I did not hesitate. I even paid extra for DHL express shipping so I’d get it sooner than a month from now. All-in I paid around $135 for the stated 4000 piece set. I’ve since seen some listed for as low as $99 on AliExpress…but it’s pretty much caveat emptor on that site, so beware the rock bottom pricing.
So anyway, got the set, spent about 14 hours assembling it and it does not disappoint.
This beast is massive. Taller than LEGO Voltron, taller than Classics Predaking, it dwarfs just about any block set I have aside from the LEGO Saturn V rocket.
Kamen Rider Kuuga Minifig, Mountain Dew, and Little Deino for scale.
The weapons packs can be removed to give you a plain-vanilla Mechagodzilla. I’m glad it came with the blue packs from the first move as I think those are more striking than the silver ones from the second. Also, (not pictured) the chest opens up to reveal the Absolute Zero cannon.
There’s a light brick in the head that makes the eyes glow yellow when activated.
“Now, time to count up your sins”
Brick quality is good. Only had one mis-molded piece. Clutch is good, but could be better. Some of the articulation points are way stronger than the surrounding brick attachments, so posing can be tricky, but as big and heavy as it is, I’m glad the ball joints are tight. No stickers, all the details are printed. If this were a LEGO set it’d be between $400-$500, so definitely worth the price.
I can absolutely recommend this to any kaiju fan and anyone looking for a big, long lasting build, or really just any mecha/robot fan looking for a good display piece. I also feel comfortable recommending any of this company’s other models after building this one. If someone gets to Prime or Soundwave before me, please share. I’ll find links if anyone is interested.
