I just finished playing XII on the PS4. I never played the PS2 version, so I can't comment on what may have been changed, but I liked it. I see what they were going for with the combat. Mostly in a turn based FF game you wind up repeating a series of mechanical inputs anyway, and the Gambits just automate that. As someone who will write a Bash script for just about anything, I kind of appreciate that. If anything, I wish it allowed for more complex statements with multiple conditions, or nested statements. On the other hand, yeah... sometimes you wonder if you're even playing the game. On the PS4 you can hit L1 to double or quadruple the speed of the game though, so that helps. My biggest complaint is that the mist abilities were underwhelming, so I barely used them. May have been because I was way overleveled most of the game and could just ROFL-stomp the bosses once I figured out what I could debuff them with.
My girlfriend loves XII, she beat it at least 4 times on the PS2. Once her initial blind playthrough, second time with a guide to get everything, third time with only the male characters and only physical attacks, fourth time with only the female characters and only magic.

So... apparently the XV Royal Edition is a dumpster fire. It's just the base game on the disc, but you still have to download all the DLC. And possibly a lot of the patches? I'm not clear on that part, but it seems like it might just be a repackaging of the existing disc with redemption codes for the DLC. So, fuck you secondary market and game preservationists? Seems people were expecting it to be like a typical AAA "Game of the Year" edition, but it's not. Might save you some money if you haven't bought the game yet, but will still require a truly epic download and does nothing for you in the future after the PS4 download servers are gone.

Just thought I'd revive this thread to say that, after not touching the game for six years, I finally beat Final Fantasy XIII granted, with some help from the FF Wiki. Though with the final battle...FINAL-final battle, it was suggested to use Saboteur on it (so I went with all three being SAB), I found it much better to Stagger that stubborn sucker with Commando/Ravager/Ravager.
Oy. They really milked the fight in this one.
