Another alert passed by shortly after my last post, and said that the advisory was extended to 5:50am. Haven't seen another alert in a while, so...don't know.
It doesn't help that SOMEONE in the neighborhood decided to resume setting off fireworks. It's a habit they'd been prone to for years, setting them off not just on Fourth of July and New Years, but sometimes holidays you don't normally associate with fireworks, and sometimes...for their own reasons I guess. But I noticed it'd been a long time since they'd done it...but tonight, with tensions high and protests in a neighboring city, they decided to make fun noises that could be mistaken for gunfire.
Let's just say, I'm actually hoping it's fireworks. Maybe this is about showing solidarity or something, but if so...yeah, still not a great idea.

Yeah, sounds about right. Looks like tear gas got deployed downtown. Nowhere near here, though.

My brother in KC joined a protest, and was hit with tear gas three times. He posted various photos and videos on Facebook, which has some of his usual snark. People had milk and saline on hand, giving it to those in need to relieve the pain, and one of our cousins, who's in the army herself and thus experienced it through training, gave him tips on how to deal with it in the future (blink a lot, breathe deeper, wave your arms).
And I think he narrowly avoided arrest.
Not sure what instigated the tear gas, though. From what he says in one of the videos, most people were at worst being loud, with very few wanting to mess stuff up. One guy with a stick trying get his smash on was, reportedly, stopped by the more peaceful protesters.

From what I've been seeing Spork, it might well have been the police instigating the tear gas just because they could.
Fuck... You guys be careful over there.

there's nothing "potential" about it.
Fascism came to America wrapped in a flag & we applauded it.

There was a protest in the next town over but thankfully everything remained peaceful. HOWEVER, the rumors were circulating via social media of bus loads of professional instigators were coming in to loot and cause shit. Thankfully it never materialized.

According to my brother, police were holding a line (and one directing traffic) until some dumbass(es?) started throwing stuff. Which I guess happened more than once.
From his account, it was largely subdued. Though, I know there are some areas where cops are more aggressive...or what they might excuse as "proactive."

Apparently in our case, it mostly happened because a bunch of idiots decided to try to loot the local Nike and Wells Fargo buildings. Some of the other protesters tried to stop them and tear gas got deployed to break up the fighting. Not great, but better than DC at the moment, I suppose.
At present, apparently the protestors are helping businesses that got vandalized with boarding up windows and such, and there hasn't been any further action from the police, so I guess we got mostly lucky.

We had a curfew here for a couple days, some protests & such, but I haven’t been anywhere near it.
The state capital got tagged with graffiti. Oh, but I guess the protests up in Portland (OR) have been huge.
