I learned about this from Linkara on Twitter yesterday (and I REALLY recommend reading his thoughts on the matter...). And it was quite abrupt, if I'm not mistaken; he was supposed to be at C2E2. This could've been a firing from someone a tier or two above him, or he finally called it quits and walked out. Feelings on the DCU forums are mixed. Yeah, you got the ones expressing relief that he's gone. Others, however, are wondering about the Metal Men series he was writing (which they said was pretty good), that he was polite in person, had genuine love for DC characters, and say they don't want to delight in someone losing their job. I, of course, and not happy someone is unemployed, so much as I'm glad that, finally, THAT guy is no longer in THAT position. As Linkara noted, there may've been good stuff during his time at DC, but plenty of it was not BECAUSE of him, but rather IN SPITE of him. What with the "let's get a character raped" and "let's kill this character I don't like" and probably "there's another character I don't like, let's turn her evil for no reason", the whole Berganza thing...and more probably outlined in that essay, "The Case Against Dan Didio". So, yeah, I'm not saying he should never be employed anywhere else, ever, or starve to death under a bridge, but obviously I'm not going to miss him.
And it seems Ethan van Sciver is running rumors that AT&T might shut DC down if their upcoming 5G event doesn't do well, so that paranoia's in the mix, too.

DC is a publishing branch through Warner Media, which while owned by AT&T... They operate separately from one another. The money DC Comics brings in is negligible compared to the money it brings in through other revenues, like movies, cartoons and other media. And it's also relatively smaller budgets for it too. It's probably worked into the infrastructure budgeting for R&D, like Marvel Comics is for Marvel Studios. EvS is a ignorant asswipe that loves to cause problems.

AT&T owns Time Warner, and thus, DC, outright. AT&T is launching HBO Max in May of this year, their version of a streaming service, which is included in their highest tier wireless plan. AT&T is also absolutely fucking hemorrhaging traditional TV customers (DirecTV lost 4 million subscribers last year, and AT&T TV Now is effectively dead), and they feel their future lies as an "entertainment and services" company, not just mobile phones. No way they're killing off DC. Quite the opposite, I'd be willing to bet with the all but assured success of the MCU D+ shows, you'll see similar on HBO Max. They're already working on a Green Lantern series.

Yeah, regardless of EVS (not familiar with his work, and have heard good and bad things about him), I wasn't entirely buying that DC would close down, outright. Though on DCU, some, even the more skeptical, ponder the possibility.
Anywho, I'm kind of curious about the nature of Didio's leaving. Was this a spontaneous firing? Did he tick someone off? Did, as one DCU poster suggested, his higher-ups decide they didn't need two "co-publishers", and got rid of the one with the bigger paycheck? Did Dan finally get sick of everything and walk out? Did a reader sacrifice enough goats into a volcano?
