Actiblizzard's been (deservedly) in the news in a bad way a lot lately, but I'm still cautiously excited about this. It's no secret I gave up on D3 (which still had that wonderful core Diablo gameplay loop that kept me overlooking it's problems for way too long) because it's just fundamentally broken in how it addresses powercreep and the lack of diversity in builds due to the bad item/skills design.
But this.. this looks like a return to what made D2 so nearly perfect (excusing the ancient UI and backpack tetris). Actual skill points, itemization that impact your abilities and at long last, the return of runewords, which actually lets you fucking customize!
Combined with the gameplay looking more akin to that game's pace and the graphics actually looking dark and grimy and bloody, and I'm trying not to get on the hype train too much.
Now if they can just get a writer who's previous experience isn't 80s saturday morning cartoons, maybe they can get out of the mess they made of the cannon too.

www.pcgamer.com/diablo-4-has-an-online-shared-open-world-and-a-non-linear-campaign/Well, apparently it's also a MMO of sorts now, so. More seriously, I'm curious, but time will tell if I sink a lot of time into it vs. other stuff I'll be playing (hello Overwatch 2 providing PVE co-op and story content like we wanted from the minute we fucking saw your first trailer.) But I'm keeping an eye on this. The cinematic trailer is spot on, though. A+ aesthetic design.

I never did get around to playing D3. I never got past the visuals. Not that every game needs to be all grim dark, but this is Diablo. It's about a nigh-unstoppable demon who sends waves of undead to attack a world already rife with cruelty and suffering.

From the way I'm reading it, it sounds like the overworld is MMO-esque, but once you get into a dungeon, it becomes a traditional party based instance. So that gives opportunities for bigger, MMO style superbosses, which... I surprisingly don't hate the idea of. As long as I'm free to go off and wander solo on my own if i choose to do so, I can see the drop in/drop out gameplay working pretty well. On a side note, I could also see myself finally giving overwatch a chance if with that sort of gameplay. Edit: apparently there's the option to go private in some fashion, so yep. On board with the concept.
