It ended up being easier to actually replace the entire roof's shingles. Obviously that's not an option for you, as yours is still new. One of the people my Dad contacted (and apparently sent pictures of the roof area in question) actually suggested the leak may be related to the chimney. If the sealant around the exterior has come loose, it may've let some water in. But it's one theory of many. As for house conditions...I think this place was built in the late 70's, early 80's. There's already some dried water damage in the master bedroom, my room still has some adhesive dots on the ceiling from when it was a nursery for the previous owners (and I guess a daughter's name sticker'ed on the door (inside). Whether it was the family before us or ones before them, they had a stone bed for a garden in front of the porch, but much to my Dad's annoyance, they didn't put down any plastic down first. That means some rocks just sunk into the dirt, which I think had some clay deposits, so plenty stuck around even when most were removed and reallocated to rock-beds I set up around the house (which was kind of expanding what was already around the backyard deck. But I DID find an old Casey Jones golf club accessory that I cleaned and put up on eBay...so there's that. And some of the electrical outlets are tied to light switches, which can be inconvenient depending on how you want to set up a certain room. For a while, the only way to access the attic (that didn't have much flooring until Dan/Rynox put some in) was to remove a loose board (i.e., the "door" and get a step ladder and pull yourself inside). Eventually, with my bro-in-law's help, we put in a proper collapsing ladder...but there's still not a lot of flooring and a lot of crap up there that makes moving around damn near impossible (but that's on us...well, mostly others, since I keep my stuff to myself). So, yeah, for all the problems and pet peeves of this place, it doesn't quite hold a dysfunctional candle to your experience.

That's how my attic is. Just a piece of drywall over a hole with no access ladder. Really though, mine isn't an attic so much as it is maintenance access to the roof. There's like no space up there, and no floor, just insulation. There is a little loft space above my bed due to the vaulted ceiling in the master bedroom, so I can shove stuff up there.

Well, turns out the culprit was the chimney (roof tiles are all good). Whereas most chimneys you see brick extensions, this one pops out with wood box and...some metal whatsit at the top (stop me if I get too technical for you). The wood was rotted, but good news is, the handyman my Dad called managed to replace the whatsit and the rotted wood (by the look of the sawdust, I guess he did the cutting on the driveway).
We did get some rain overnight last night, and while it got heavy, it didn't last long...not the length of an entire Jack Bauer mission like last time...and no leak. So maybe last week's wind moved something just right...or wrong, in this case.

Yeah, I actually had my AC on a day or two so far. I think it's actually Autumn now, and lows are down into the low 40's/high 30's. I'm expecting another warm winter though because that's the only kind we have now.

This time last week: Don't step outside without protective clothing or you could get frostbite.
Today: Should I wear shorts on the first day of January in Pittsburgh?

Yeah, it was cold as fuck Christmas day when I went to my sister's. That's a 50 mile trip one way, and it took my car's battery down to 52% just from it being high speed highway driving and so fucking cold. It did better on the way back, probably because the battery was still warm, and I wasn't speeding as much, but I still pulled in at home with only 14%.
Then today heading to my cousins' for New Years, that's a 50 mile round trip and only took like 15% off the battery. I could've run that trip multiple times and been fine. And as for me, I didn't even wear a jacket.
