That's something I've noticed about a lot of Netflix anime. They all seem to have that same aesthetic vibe to them. A dark "this ain't for the kiddies!" sort of tone that seems to always be trying too hard. Sure, there's wonderful exceptions like Little Witch Academia, but that's Studio Trigger, so that's to be expected. I dunno man. I guess when I hear of an anime coming to Netflix, I'm not all that excited. The only two I've liked were Castlevania (which is very hit or miss and a large part of my enjoyment is my love of the source material), and Blood of Zeus which was way better than it had any right to be. I was excited seeing this Godzilla show up in my feed, but from the reviews here I'm not even gonna waste my time with it.

Between Godzilla: Singular Point, Pacific Rim: Black and Kong Skull Island there's gonna be a whole lot of teenaged anime characters fighting giant monsters on Netflix over the next year or so. I hope some of it is decent, although I'm expecting all the usual anime tropes with kaiju thrown in.

I hope some of it is decent, although I'm expecting all the usual anime tropes with kaiju thrown in. I get you. I can't speak for Pacific Rim and Kong... But with Godzilla Singular Point? Lemme get the list... Studio Bones is the main production company, responsible a good chunk of some of the best anime made in the last 20 years. Studio Orange is the other production company, producing really good quality CGI that blends nicely with the 2D artwork. Their earliest work was Zoids: Chaotic Century (the good one) and the CGI mechanics in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Along Complex. (Also the good ones, NOT the recent CGI one.) They also did a show called Dimension W, which had some impressive CGI animation in there as well. The writer is Toe EnJoe, known in the science circles for coming up with some revolutionary concepts and stories. (He's pretty much beloved in the Quantum Physics circles. As soon as I mentioned his name to my wife, she fangirled out like crazy, being the scientist she is.) The character designs are by Blue Exorcist creator Kazue Kato, and we can see from the trailer he does a decent job. The kaiju designs by former Ghibli animator, Eiji Yamamori. You saw a lot of his monster design work on Spirited Away, Ponyo and Princess Mononoke. In fact, he's been involved with on every major Ghibli production since 1997-2016, as well as Mary and the Witch's Flower. And the director, Atsushi Takahashi, his previous works include being second unit director for Spirited Away, Blue Exorcist: the Movie, Rideback (which I have never seen), and some of the better episodes of Space Dandy. (The non horrible ones.) and the recent Doraemon movie, which while I'm not a Doraemon fan, I've heard nothing but good things about. So yeah. Unlike the other Godzilla anime, this ACTUALLY looks like it has real production values and talent on it.

Oh my bad, I misunderstood it as being part of the same series (or whatever you wanna call it) as the previous animations. Appreciate both the correction and the renewed hope it might be good, because I definitely feel like animation could be a perfect venue for good Kaiju stuff.

(Pushes big stack of chips to the middle of the table...)
ALL IN!
We're getting new versions of Rodan, Anguirus, Hedorah, Manda, Kumonga, Megalon, Titanosaurus (!) and Gabara. FREAKIN' GABARA!
I'm also four episodes into Pacific Rim: The Black. It's not bad.

So the first buncha episodes of Godzilla: Singular Point dropped today.
Ignore the previous anime movies. They have NOTHING to do with them. I thought it was a fun reimagination of the entire Godzila mythos. I can see some people not digging it, but I totally love it so far.

Singular Point was....OK. A lot of the kaiju were not what I thought they were. There were several mash-ups of classic Showa kaiju, and G himself went through several forms ala Shin Gidzilla. Godzilla barely got any screen time and the whole series was EXTREMELY exposition heavy when it came to the "science" but it was a decent watch.

Please bear in mind, my wife is a scientist and her friend is a theoretical physicist. So their nerding out enthusiasm was kinda infectious.
Also I love Jet Jaguar.
