Netflix recently released this documentary series. Each episode focuses on one toy line's history and they're pretty comprehensive about the subjects, warts and all. Lots of good interviews with toy designers and executives. Two things I don't like about the show....the cheesy flashback recreations that luckily don't take up too much time...and he theme song is terrible. Definitely use the "skip intro" feature.
The first four episodes are Star Wars, Barbie, He-Man and G.I. Joe. I enjoyed all of them and, surprisingly, I found the Barbie episode most interesting, probably because I knew the least about that subject. Four more episodes will be released this year...,Lego, Hello Kitty, Transformers and Star Trek. If you have access to Netflix, give it a look.

Really good set of four episodes so far. I was a little disappointed that the Star Wars episode went from the end of Return of the Jedi, mentioned the dark age of the late 80's and early 90's and then launched straight into the Phantom Menace's over saturation. No mention of Ewoks/Droids toys or the collecting rebirth started by the Micro Machines and then Power of the Force figures and Shadows of the Empire onslaught well before 1999. The Barbie one was really interesting. The reasoning behind her "outrageous" figure (so that clothes made of fabrics and threads that really can't be scaled down to 12" would look RIGHT on the doll) made SO MUCH SENSE! Just reminded me of how stupid a Punisher or Blade figure always looks when they try to put a trench coat on it. And I still agree 100% with Barbie...math class is hard. I never knew that Skeletor was, in part, inspired by a close encounter with the mummy of Elmer McCurdy. That's a weird tale if you ever feel like Googling it. GI Joe episode could have used a little more Larry Hama.

I assume it was the confines of the running time. I noticed the same thing in the Joe episode, Extreme was glossed over and I don't think they mentioned Sigma 6 at all (although I was delighted to see Super Joe, The Shield and Gor, if only briefly). I'm curious to see how abridged the Transformers' history will be outside of G1 and the movies.

Wonder if they will release all the deleted scenes. They did have a bunch about Droids, but they cut it.

I watched these the other day, pretty interesting overall. Obviously not aimed at toy geeks like us, since we'll know everything for the lines we follow and nitpick everything overlooked. Like Goji, I was most interested in the Barbie one because I knew next to jack shit about Barbie.

Yeah. That piece is...disconcerting to say the least.

Yeah. That piece is...disconcerting to say the least. They answered that question on FB. Also a few of the guys from THC (The Hardcore Collectors) are having parts of there collection shown in the Transformers episode!

New episodes go live tomorrow. Separate from this series there's also a feature length documentary about Funko that I'll get around to watching at some point.
