The new Masters series will stream on Netflix. Kevin Smith is show runner with animation by Powerhouse, the studio behind Castlevania. The show will not be a reboot but a continuation of the original 80's series.
Discuss.

That came out of nowhere. A role reversal, but I figured a new series would come about as a spin off of the new She Ra series. But seeing the premise of this, I am definitely intrigued.

I've of mixed feelings on this.
On one hand, I'm disappointed, because I really like how the She-Ra team has been handling their show ands I wanted to see their interpretations of the He-Man cast.
On the other hand, this is a unique change of pace. How many times is it that we see a new cartoon series come out based on an older franchise and they just reboot it or leave some ambiguous connection to the previous series. But to come out and outright say "Hey, this is a continuation!" That's something different that I can't see I've seen before with an animated property. Sure, we've had shows resurrected, usually with some of the same creative teams as before. (Family Guy, Kim Possible, Futurama, various DC shows) But with a brand new creative team? Yeah, Beast Wars did something like that, but it was a continuation in the way that The Next Generation was a continuation of the Classic Star Trek. But to outright "Doctor Who" an animated series like He-Man? Damn.
Imagine if it's a success and a few years down the line, it's announced a Season Five of Generation One Transformers?
That's no longer off the table anymore.

I think we can all agree, taking off the nostalgia glasses, that cartoons now are WAY better than "our" cartoons, in the sense of overall quality (writing, plotting, etc). The idea of a G1 Transformers cartoon season that actually lives up to what I thought it was as a kid excites me greatly.

I might replace OM as the object of Mach's hatred but didn't Voltron the Third Dimension count? But a more recent example and perhaps a bit more obscure is the continuation of the Mysterious Cities of Gold. It was a series from the 80s on Nick. Fast forward to 2012, it got a second season! Then a third. And a fourth for 2020. The crappy thing is no US release of the newer seasons.

Hey you're right. Voltron: T3D counts. Too bad it sucked.

The idea of a G1 Transformers cartoon season that actually lives up to what I thought it was as a kid excites me greatly. I suppose this could be a thing, but frankly, anything that actively tries to pick up from the Sunbow continuity makes me frown faintly because we're already choking on G1 retreads/reworks so hard that you can barely breathe. Prime is basically G1. Cyberverse is basically G1. I know that it's toy driven, but I'd like a show that wasn't literally the same story as Sunbow with a slightly better execution tied on. Prime carried itself on being sort of G1-meets-Bayverse in the middle with better writing, but literally every cartoon being "and Cybertron has fallen into civil war..." is a bit tiresome. We haven't gotten any oddball outside of the box plotting since Animated, which at least had the decency to make itself a post-war story. But given that we've got three back to back series based purely on recreating G1 characters, I think that sort of thing is unlikely these days. On the topic, I honestly don't know enough about the 80s He-Man to comment. My introduction to the franchise was the 2004 cartoon.

I'm actually curious if this was a response to criticisms of the current She-Ra cartoon. I haven't watched, and I can't say I have the desire to, but what if they heard some people complaining about how the "old show" was better and they should've done something like that, and somehow, someone at Netflix got convinced to straight up revive the old, corny series? And Kevin Smith is involved because, hey, he's still got cred with the nerds, right?
...
Yeah, that's probably a bit of a stretch. Maybe except for the Kevin Smith part...

Eh...the old She-Ra show wasn't better, but I enjoyed it at the time. The new show is just not intended for me. I watched a handful of episodes and gave up. If i need a She-Ra fix, I’ll just go re-read the recent DC Masters comics. Those did a She-Ra origin and storyline I really liked. As far as the new show goes...whatever keeps Masters out there as a viable property is okay by me.

i can't shake the feeling this is in direct response to She-Ra.
Like, a bunch of dudes saw that girls were suddenly way into MOTU & loudly proclaimed "NO! that's OURS!"
