Fun fact about that: he was ALWAYS Eggman in the Japanese versions. For some reason, during the whole "exact translation, not localization" trend around the turn of the century they started calling him Eggman in the US too (Adventure was the first, IIRC. About when I stopped playing Sonic, so not sure). But Robotnik just sounds so much better, like a crazy scientist name should sound. Happy to hear this, feel REALLY bad for the poor VFX staff that are gonna be working 20 hour days from now til November. Hopefully, the current contract limits are such that they can renegotiate terms to their advantage, because everything about that THING screams 'marketing department fuckups'. That, or the redesigns were already in progress and they put out that trailer to generate attention. After the 'leaks' a few months back, only the most clueless of execs had to know what would happen.

I've been following the development of this movie for awhile -- not out of any interest in IT, per se, but in the fact that Sega's actually thinking about shopping the IPs I give a shit about pending the success (I would KILL to see Golden Axe get the Netflix treatment ala Castlevania, for example. Or really, anything better than the hilarious dumpster fire the PSO2 anime is).
But this seems to very much be a case of studio executive blindness - even the reaction from Sega/Sonic Team wasn't good from what I've gathered, so how it got this far, I dunno. I hope you're right about that already having been planned and this was a testing the waters, but we'll see.

Great that they’re fixing Sonic!
I guess the suspicious part is how quickly the director was able to say “this will be fixed!” Like it was already given the green light to spend a ton more of Paramount’s money to fix it. This could be an awesome PR stunt to generate positive buzz, like, showing the fans that they’re listening. The negative buzz has all but stopped from what I’ve seen.
At any rate, I just hope that end product is enjoyable.

Could be that in-house opinions were mixed, or at least a certain powerful few were fine with it when others weren't and someone had the idea of saying, "hey, about about instead going forward with this inevitably despised design, we show the trailer in advance, gauge reactions, and if a lot of people don't like it, we go with this better redesign some of us have been workshopping?"
It's a long-shot, yeah, but you never know.

Saw it today.
It's actually pretty fun. Yeah, you have some predictable tropes, a couple fart/poop jokes for the kiddies, and Sonic's speed was a little inconsistent...but it was still thoroughly entertaining. Jim Carrey was great, giving a lot about Robotnik almost effortlessly (like how much he prefers machines).
But I've never been in depth in the Sonic lore/mythos, so I don't know how more committed fans might react to it. I'm sure they caught more Easter Eggs than I did.
