I admit, I have to wonder at how much the previous film is needed to understand this one. I'm given to understand the previous Godzilla film was kinda 'enh'.

Advanced reviews coming in...consensus.... If you're going for "plot" or "story", stay home. If you're going for wall to wall giant monsters causing massive destruction and beating the living hell out of each other with the most beautifully rendered kaiju ever, then you're good to go! There's confirmation of an end credits scene that might set up....well, you know. Here's Moviebob's review which made me very happy.

For me to post a review would be superfluous as my opinion was predetermined, so I won't bother. Let's just say, I feel bad for whatever unsuspecting patron sat in that theatre seat after me. The Easter eggs, callbacks and homages were amazing. Soundtrack has been purchased.

This might be a good one for a late night screening after work (I get off at 9:00). Mostly if not totally empty theater on a weeknight, and just take it in.

Best review I’ve seen. He went to Japan for the Tokyo premiere!

Less than $50M opening in the US and $130M foreign. Yeesh. Good thing GvK is already in production.
If anyone that has seen the movie is curious, here are the 17...the last 8 are still unseen.
1- Godzilla 2- Ghidorah 3- Mothra 4- Rodan 5- Kong 6- MUTO Prime 7- Scylla 8- Behemoth 9- Methuselah 10- Mokele-Mbembe 11- Baphomet 12- Tiamat 13- Typhoon 14- Abaddon 15- Leviathan 16- Sargon 17- Bunyip

If I recall correctly, that amount is about on par with the opening weekend of the 2014 movie.
We're seeing it Tuesday.

Was that a list of kaiju, or Final Fantasy summons?

If I recall correctly, that amount is about on par with the opening weekend of the 2014 movie. Godzilla opened at $93M, Kong Skull Island at $61M.
