www.nme.com/news/tv/simpsons-confirm-apu-leave-2394238I've been half-heartedly following the "controversy" with Apu in recent months and really the only conclusion I can come to is that it's past time for "The Simpsons" to write ITSELF out. After three decades I think the spark has long since faded. But sadly it seems at this point that the only way the show MIGHT go off the air is if someone irreplaceable dies...

I haven't seen Hari's documentary, and I can understand not liking a portrayal of a character that's a parody or satire of your culture/race, but I agree with Shankar, this is a b.s. move. Granted, I don't watch the show like I used to, because it's stopped being funny, but what, besides a documentary from an @midnight regular, is the drive here? Are Indian-Americans all really that angry about Apu?
According to Max G, who did a video countering the "Problems" (below...it's over 45 minutes long, and the language gets pretty salty in the last 3rd or fourth or so), Mr. Kondablolu didn't bother interviewing those of Indian culture that aren't as angry with Apu. If that's true, he's Michael Moore'd his way to having the show ditch a character that's probably not as harmful as he thinks (but again, I haven't seen it). He talks about kids doing accents, and how hurtful that was since he couldn't make a comeback for that...I got repeatedly bullied throughout my public school life. I got teased and treated like garbage for a variety of reasons, any time I retaliated in kind, I got in trouble for it, and I couldn't blame a damn cartoon show. I was told to "just ignore it" and expected not to sink to their level. Doesn't this kind of take responsibility for bullying AWAY from, y'know...THE FREAKIN' BULLIES?! Sweet crap, is the "violent video games" scare all over again?
On the other hand, since there aren't many prominent characters of Indian decent on American television, I can kind of understand where this animosity is coming from. Sure, there are lots of white, straight dudes in media, but that doesn't mean I particularly identify with them. And even if I find a character that I do identify with on some level, maybe I don't like how they're portrayed on some level. But I just kinda have to deal with it. But then I'm not a moderately well-known stand-up.

Controversies and predictions coming true aside, I haven't cared for watching Simpsons regularly since over a decade and a half ago. Then after that I tried to at least keep watching the Treehouse of Horrors but even those are scrapping the bottom of the barrel. I think it's time for it to go. Bad thing is though, the way Hollywood is now with rehashes, it probably wont be five years since it's final episode that there will be talk of rebooting the series.

Yeah, I honestly cannot remember the last time I watched The Simpsons or what it was even about. Someone must be, but it’s not me.
