Russ Heath died on August 23rd, age 91 from cancer. Russ was famous for his realism, especially in war comics. He co-created the Sea Devils and the Haunted Tank at DC. he also illustrated those Roman and Revolutionary toy soldier ads that appeared on the back covers of comics throughout the 60's and 70's which have become pieces of Americana. He got paid $50 for both.
Marie Severin died on August 30th at age 89 after sufering a stroke. Marie broke into comics in 1949 coloring her brother John's artwork for EC Comics. One of the few women working in the comics industry of old, she was a staple at Marvel for decades until the early 2000's. She co-created Spider-Woman/Jessica Drew.
Gary Friedrich also died yesterday at age 75. Gary wrote many comics for Charlton, Marvel and other publishers from the late 60's into the 90's, but his claim to fame was co-creating Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider. When GR made it big in film, Gary sued Marvel for the rights to the character. They reached a settlement in 2014. Gary had been suffering from Parkinson's disease.
