He pretty much finished his script for GotG3 right? They’ll prob take his name off the credits then, cut him a check & call it good. Maybe even keep him on, working uncredited behind the scenes to maintain a positive PR image. Not worried about it.
Besides, his style was wearing thin a bit already by vol. 2, which was SO jokey, that it took me out of the movie on more than one occasion. Like, Yondu just died & they keep making David Hasselhoff jokes during the eulogy. It’s like they’re afraid of their audience feeling anything other than just laughs. The big sendoff by the Ravagers was more touching than the eulogy. And it’s strange, because part 1 maintained a perfect balance of comedy & seriousness. It wasn’t all just jokes, jokes, jokes.
So while the circumstances behind his firing are ugly & muddy & whatever, I won’t mind seeing someone else take the reigns for a while.

The bigger problem is, this was a non-issue when Disney first found out about it six years ago. And the guy still made two of their Marvel films. Yet that didn't stop some ass-wagon from bringing up decades old attempts at being a "provocateur", which he's since recanted and noted regret, all because Gunn doesn't agree with him politically. And said ass-wagon has, much more recently, made posts on Twitter making light or just plain disregarding sexual assault (and that's just the stuff I know of).
But Disney wants to protect their brand, and ass-wagon doesn't work for them, so Gunn is out of a job, and if he's lucky, it won't be impossible for him to find work later.

I'm fine with Disney firing someone for doing something offensive, they're a company, they're allowed to protect their brand, fine, cool. But.. they KNEW about this already. So we're potentially fucking up the future of the MCU on the cosmic side because of a douchcanoe having a tantrum.

Disney (ABC) backed itself into a corner with the immediate firing of Roseanne. Now that this has come to light, if they don't fire Gunn they'll have to deal with the "Disney lets liberals get away with anything" narrative, and I don't think they want to deal with it. Funny thing is, this wasn't even trending as a story until Disney came out and publicly cut ties with Gunn as a pre-emptive strike.

Most of the complaint campaign was led by Mike Cernovich, a far-right conspiracy theorist who has made a career out of phrases like "you can't rape the willing." Given that it's had to be on Disney's side for firing Gunn over a few decade-old jokes he had long since apologized for.
Although- Gunn obviously needs a new job & Paramount is probably looking for a fresh talent to helm the Transformers movie projects. Hmm...

I'm 99% certain it's got more to do with not wanting to upset the Feds for final approval over the Fox buyout. Once it's done... They'll bring him back or they'll do what Mako said and cut a check and uncredited behind the camera work.

It does suck that he lost his job over something that you know the other guy doesn’t even care about. He was just literally out to hurt Gunn’s career and that’s a shitty thing to do.
Still- the readiness with which Gunn crafted up a big apology & bowed out with grace still makes me think that Disney is gonna keep him on, just out of the spotlight for a while. Maybe have him use a pseudonym. At the end of the day, they’re out to make money, & Gunn has made them a lot. A little bad PR from over a decade ago isn’t something that’s likely to make them drop the hammer with no regard to their shareholders.

Despite fan backlash, a online "re-hire Gunn" petition with tens of thousands of signatures and an open letter in support of Gunn signed by the entire GotG cast, Disney seems to have dug in its heels on this. At this point, the future of the Guardians franchise is very much in doubt. No matter what happens, I don't think ewe'll see Dave Bautista back as Drax. He's been the most openly critical of the firing, saying that working for Disney is "nauseating" and that if they scrap Gunn's finished script, he'll ask to get out of his contract. If the rest of the cast follows suit, we may not see this version of the Guardians past A4, especially with all the new Marvel toys that Disney just acquired.
