I find it baffling that a modestly budgeted comedy movie does a far more faithful and engaging X-Men movie than the actual X-Men movies. About a quarter of the way through the movie it stops being a Deadpool movie and becomes a X-Men movie. (Or X-Force really... Sorta.) Is it a better movie than Black Panther or Infinity War? No. Not even close. Is it a lot of fun? Oh my God, yes!
The movie is insane and fun. I still think Deadpool 1 is better, but that's like saying that Chocolate Moose Tracks ice cream is better than Regular Moose Tracks ice cream... It's still Moose Tracks. As comic movies goes, it's pretty dang good. Brolin is frickin' amazing as Cable, Beets is fun and charming as Domino and I missed her every time she wasn't on the screen. The kid who played Russell was scarily good! Oh my god, he's great, considering that child actors usually aren't. But he was awesome. Honestly, the weakest point in this movie... Was T.J. Miller's character. Every time he was on the screen, it was a recycle of older jokes from movie one... And sometimes that broke up the rhythm. X-Force... Jesus Christ, frickin' X-Force... Those poor and clever bastards in marketing!
But one thing I wanna point out as a comic book fan, this movie does one thing that not even the Marvel studios movies does right: It respects it's viewer's intelligence. (Which is saying something, because this is a movie that has our hero walk around in a dramatic scene with toddler legs and matching penis... Which we do see.) It lets us know that these characters have histories that we don't always know about, or even NEED to know about.
This is the small spoiler part... When the Juggernaut (FUCKING JUGGERNAUT!!) shows up, he's not only pretty damn perfect (though I wish the helmet wasn't silver), and not only do we get our Juggernaut vs Colossus fight (hell yeah!), but there's a scene where him and Russell are talking, and he off-handedly mentions that he wears his helmet because his brother kept trying to get into his head, but he's in a wheelchair now... So it's evened out. He's Professor X's brother, but they don't dwell on it at all. If you don't know his past, it doesn't distract from the movie's story. We don't need to know about the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak... But they give us enough. And that's all we need. But if you DO know if it? if you understand Juggernaut's history of abuse, you understand why he and Russell connected so easily. NONE of this is stated in the movie, but there are some small implications, meaning that they are there. It's full of little nods like that, that aren't distracting, but they're there.
Also, they gave Juggernaut the most amazing theme music ever.
And you know what? Sometimes, that's all I want.
