Well, we know that Revenge of the Fallen got royally screwed by the Writer's Strike and Bay basically pushed on ahead with improv and such rather than put his production crew out of work for six months with deadlines approaching. Dark of the Moon was okay, if not terrific, and Bay said he was done.
Then Hasbro kept making the paychecks bigger, and yeah, Bay probably should've backed out of Age of Extinction and Last Knight. They have a lot of feeling of being phoned in on rewatches, which makes me wonder if Bay was really only doing it for the paycheck.
Seeing a fresh director take it on makes me curious.

Sorry Boss Raptor... I got a feeling this year, when I make the new Den banner for the TF movie, it's not going to be a negative one. Blue Lantern ring flying towards movie-Bee? Just a stab in the dark. Hey, "Stab in the Dark", I think that would've been the subtitle of the next Bay-formers movie! But yeah, the paint-by-Bay's-numbers of the movies haven't really made things better, and nostalgia mixed with "my childhood properties have to grow up with me" mentalities can only take things so far. We hardly get to know any of the 'bots, thinking quick lines like the famous "right of all sentient beings" bit or Prime empathizing with Cade Yaeger on parenthood make up for it, but it doesn't. Without some kind of solid foundation beyond "big robots make big booms", we have little to go on for, say, Optimus Prime in this world. And being voiced by Peter Cullen only enhances the nostalgia, I think almost instinctively making people recall the cartoon version, and leading to a bit of "what the Hell" when he utters, "kill them all". If you want to make him some grizzled war vet, fine (in theory), but there it doesn't feel as earned as it should be. And Bumblebee...he speaks in stolen dialogue from other movies, shows, etc.. He's a freakin' Junkion, people! BUMBLEBEE IS A JUNKION!!!

I have no problem with Prime "falling from grace" and being corrupted as a story mechanic, but it's handled so slapdash hamfisted that it's just jarring.

I even remember thinking of a way to kind of rebuild Prime after Revenge of the Fallen, where we'd get a quiet moment between Prime and one of the NEST soldiers (or the President). He admits he doesn't enjoy killing his fellow Cybertronians, how weary he is of war, but he's got a responsibility to protect the innocent, and it'd sound SO FREAKIN' AWESOME from Cullen.
Even with the departure of Bay and the likelihood of some manner of reboot/retcon, I'm not getting my hopes up of anything like that. If Bumblebee seriously delivers...then maybe.

I remember one of the things often cited about BW was that the cast was small and relatively stable. Yes, they did have to introduce the new toys for the year and make some room, but for the most part the deaths were meaningful. Pretty much just Scorponok and Terrorsaur got killed off to little or no effect. Everybody else it felt like it had impact. Even when a villain like Tarantulas bites it, you feel it because he'd been with you for 3 years.
