I know there are some Gundam experts around here. I myself have never seen the show...but I did read a Gundam novel once. Anyway, I bought this Minifig and have a couple of questions. Firstly, is the shield it came with appropriate for this particular model. Secondly, what type of rifle would this thing typically carry? It didn't come with a gun but I can probably find or build something that will serve but need some sort of reference.

Yes to the first and to your second... Google '08th MS Team Gundam' and you'll find your references.

RX-79(G) Gundam Ground Type
It's a variant of the original Gundam customized for ground combat. All of the space-use stuff like the life support systems and maneuvering verniers are stripped out to reduce weight. In its place, they had room for some extra armaments in the chest. It was also kind of a halfway point between the super high performance Gundam and the grunt GM.
Cool thing about it is it had this container backpack which could hold a variety of things. The standard weapon was a somewhat underwhelming machine gun, but it did also have a beam rifle. Optional weapons in the backpack were a large caliber cannon, a bazooka, a missile launcher, a net launcher... you could almost get away with any kind of military-style weapon. It also of course had the beam sabers, in this case tucked into extra space in the calves (where the original Gundam had thrusters).
It also happens to be possibly my favorite Gundam, not in the least because 08th MS Team is a fucking good show.

Thanks guys, that gives me a lot to go on.
I'm going to attempt to build a version of this big, long rifle with a top-loading magazine I saw a couple pictures of the mech using. Failing that, I've seen other pics of it carrying a carbine-like gun that I know I can find a respectable facsimile of.

Probably the 180mm cannon is what you saw, along with the standard machine gun. One of the most famous images of that Gundam is of Sanders' unit kneeling on the ground, using the shield as a brace to prop up the cannon's barrel. So famous that versions of that pose were used for the box art of three different model kits, and it's the first thing everybody tries to do with any kit or figure of it. It's a pretty iconic weapon.
In any case though, the phrase that goes around the Gundam modeling community is "Gunpla is freedom", meaning feel free to do whatever the hell you want. It's not like the military modeling community where people will freak over any color variation and count the rivets on the tank armor.
